Because She’s Always Been There

There is something quietly powerful about the relationship between a mother and her daughter. It is a connection that changes with time, deepens through shared experiences, and grows in unexpected ways.

For Beatrice Tan, founder and creative director of KLARRA, and her mum, Cherine Chia, motherhood has not only brought new life into their home. It’s brought them even closer, threading new memories between old ones. What was once a quiet space is now filled with laughter, little footsteps, and the simple joy of singing and dancing together. Through the ups and downs, they have become each other’s constant. Not just as mother and daughter, but as best friends, and the kind of support every mum hopes to be and every daughter cherishes.

In this special Mother’s Day story, they open up about the moments that shaped them, the lessons they carry forward, and the love that holds it all together.

What’s your favourite memory of being a mum?
Cherine: Watching the girls grow up to become more sensible people.

What’s the most beautiful part of watching your daughter become a mother?
C: My status has changed beyond just a mother. I am now more than a mother to Beatrice – I am her mum, her mentor, her friend. She can talk to me about anything. When the baby cries at night, we will look after the baby together. I have become closer to her after she became a mother. Before she was a mum, the house was quiet even after she came home. With her children now, the house becomes crowded with lots of happiness.

What qualities of hers make you proud as a mother?
C: It’s not about how successful she is, but how she overcame all the stress and challenges. She is able to cope with everything, and that is so much more important. Even when there’s so much on her plate, she handles it with strength.

What’s your favourite part about watching your grandchildren grow up?
C: Every day is a new day for me. The first time they called me “Mama”, their first word, first step — everything is really amazing. It’s especially nice when we turn on the music, and we sing and dance together. Whenever our in-laws come over, we sing and dance together as well. It’s beautiful.

What has been the most rewarding part of your motherhood journey so far? "The most rewarding part is watching them grow up into their own personalities and become individuals. Each of them is different in their own way. To witness that is truly rewarding.” - Beatrice

How has becoming a mother changed your relationship with your own mum?
B: I grew significantly closer to my mum. We were already close before. As Mum mentioned, before kids, when we came home, we would just go into our own rooms. Now with the kids, we spend a lot of time together. My mum is really my best friend, the person I trust the most. I share everything with her and ask her for advice on everything. That’s why I am really grateful for my mum, and I appreciate motherhood much more. She is the most important person in the world to me.

When the kids came along, my mum really supported me so much. It is really interesting to see how each day is different. We come together to take care of the kids, and she helps so much when I am at work. We communicate about everything and have grown so much closer.

What’s something your mum taught you that you now share with your kids?
B: My mum taught me a lot. But the most important thing I hold close to my heart is that she always encourages me to see the positive in each challenge. It can be stressful juggling motherhood and work, but she always reminds me to look at the positive side of things and be grateful that we get to experience this, to watch the children grow.

What’s something your children do that always brings a smile to your face?
B: There’s a lot. But witnessing them grow, their first steps, mispronouncing words, and forming sentences while learning to speak a language is really funny sometimes. The endearing moments of them coming to us to give us random hugs are very rewarding, and I am very happy to experience that.

What’s something you want to tell each other?
C: All the best to her. Don’t be afraid to fall. Whatever happens, take it as an experience for the next time so you will be a better person then.

"My mum is very important to me. I wouldn’t be able to have everything I have today without her. I am very grateful to have my mum as my best friend." - Beatrice
